Bant Swak
Bant Swak village was founded by two ethnic families belonging to the Shan tribe (the largest minority group in Myanmar) located in a valley between two mountains: Lwel Mai and Mel Nel. Originally, this village was named the place Want Sawk, "Want" meaning valley; "Swak" the corner of the mountain. These families used to grow poppy which was the obvious choice because of the natural conditions of the area. Twenty years later, ten Pa O families arrived in the village, who eventually built a monastery that brought them together as a village. The monk that ran the monastery changed the name to Bant Swak.
31 families started growing coffee initially making this village Indigo Mountain’s first farmer partner. Today more than 100 households grow coffee and are aided by Khun and the others at Indigo Mountain to adopt the best climate resilient practices. Coffee has now become a viable alternative to poppy guaranteeing a good income to make a living.
